Tanzania - Pemba Diving

Pembe Island DolphinsPemba Island is the ultimate diving destination! Diving off tropical Pemba is among the most spectacular to be found. It is characterized by dramatic clear, blue water drop-offs along with pristine shallow reefs. Hard and soft coral gardens are alive with schools of marine life, as well as the opportunity to explore several truly native island villages, virtually untouched by modern civilization.

 

Marlins, Sailfish, Tuna, Wahoo, Turtles, Manta Rays and Dolphins are some of the more famous residents of the Pemba channel. The Pemba channel separates Shimoni in Kenya from Pemba Island. The channel runs deep until it approaches the Pemba coastline and then begins a dramatic rise to create sheer wall off the coast. The western side is where the diving is conducted.

 

Diving off tropical Pemba is among the most spectacular to be found in East Africa. At present the number of divers is small enough to ensure exclusive dive sites. It is the policy of the Commission for Tourism to protect Pemba 's marine resources and conservation areas are being designated to protect the reefs and islands. Spear fishing is illegal.

 

Conditions here are ideal all year round, with the exception of May and June, which seasonally subjects to the long rains.

Sample Itinerary

DAY 1:

  • Arrive in Pemba , where you will be met your local Africa Tour representative. You will be transferred to Manta Reef lodge

  • Manta Reef Lodge is situated on Pemba Island, off the Coast of Kenya and Tanzania. Caught between the tropical rainforest and the gentle blue waters of the Indian Ocean, Manta Reef is a unique wilderness resort. It is totally secluded, with access limited to sea and planes only - the ultimate in peace and tranquility. The natural rustic open plan timber cabins are all sea facing with uninterrupted panoramic ocean views. The rooms all have en suite facilities with hot and cold running water. This unspoilt " bush & beach " wilderness is yours to experience on your own - never accommodate more than 20 guests.

DAY 2,3,4,5,6:

  • Two dives per day with breakfast back at the hotel between your dives.

  • Relax and enjoy the beautiful beaches in the afternoon. Speak to your local Africa Tour representative to arrange a city tour of Pemba.

  • For those wishing to experience adventure, there are plenty of excursions to join! Discover the hidden delights of the rainforest - the fauna & flora, the extensive rice plantations, fishing villages untouched by modern civilization or just take a relaxing stroll and explore the deserted beaches covered with sea shells. Excursions to the lighthouse and Ngezi forest can be arranged. The lighthouse with its fantastic views of the island, ocean and the Ngezi forest with its 150ft trees (now a protected forest) should surely not be missed.

DAY 7:

  • Spend the day at leisure

DAY 8:

  • After breakfast your local Africa Tour representative will pick you up and transfer you to the airport for your departure.
