Building Relationships, Creating Experiences: How Our Partner, West Shore Scuba, Took 103 Divers to Bonaire
For West Shore Scuba and its founder, Ron Willis, scuba diving isn’t just about getting underwater—it’s about building lifelong relationships. Over the years, West Shore Scuba has cultivated a strong and loyal community of divers, proving that with the right approach, any dive shop can achieve extraordinary success. This year, their efforts culminated in an impressive feat: taking 103 people on an unforgettable trip to Bonaire. And that’s just one of the many trips they work with Deep Blue Adventures to offer throughout the year!
From Small Beginnings to a Massive Success
West Shore Scuba’s Bonaire trips started like most dive shop adventures—with just a handful of divers. 6 to be exact! But as the years passed, Ron and his team developed a formula that turned their trips into highly anticipated events. Their ability to examine each trip individually and customize each experience to meet the wants and needs of the travelers and what the destination can provide them has been an integral skillset in their fruitful travel program. Taking what they know and customizing dive schedules, creating unique experiences, and catering to both divers and non-divers alike turned Bonaire into one of their most successful destinations. Out of 103 travelers, 14 were non-divers, and 56 were new to West Shore Scuba. What truly sets West Shore Scuba apart is the sense of community it fosters—travelers not only return for more adventures but also bring their friends and family along to share the experience. While offering high-value services at competitive rates is essential, it’s just as important to have a team that genuinely connects with customers. The glowing reviews and the strong bonds formed with returning travelers are a true testament to the dedication and passion of the West Shore Scuba staff.
The Secret to Scaling Up: Thoughtful Organization and Personalization
Taking 103 people on a dive trip requires careful planning, and West Shore Scuba mastered this challenge by structuring the group into 13 smaller, well-matched teams. Each team was led by a dedicated PADI professional who ensured that members were properly weighted, assisted with shore entries, and had guidance on navigating Bonaire’s waters.
The teams weren’t just randomly assigned; they were thoughtfully curated based on interests, backgrounds, and certification levels. For instance, a team of medical professionals, humorously named “Team Bad Molar,” bonded over their shared professions as doctors and dentists. For the nondivers who would likely see each other more while their divers were out exploring, they were known as “Team Topside”. This strategic approach fostered camaraderie, making it easy for participants to build friendships that would last far beyond the trip.
It’s essential to consider the needs of non-divers on any dive trip rather than leaving them to figure things out on their own. Thoughtful planning ensures that everyone, regardless of their interest in diving, feels engaged and has a fulfilling experience. Providing curated activities and accommodations that cater to non-divers is just as important as selecting top-tier dive opportunities. Plaza Beach excels in this regard, offering a well-rounded experience with amenities such as a protected beach with a breakwater for snorkeling, a spacious pool, and all-day dining options. Bonaire also has some great opportunities for off-site excursions! These features make it an ideal destination where both divers and non-divers can relax, explore, and fully enjoy their time.
In addition to creating unforgettable travel experiences, West Shore Scuba offers value-added services such as bringing in specialists like Amanda Parr, the original author of the PADI Yoga Diver Distinctive Specialty. Amanda, who began working with West Shore Scuba a decade ago before moving to Nevis to run yoga retreats, conducts yoga clinics that integrate underwater yoga techniques. Her workshops focus on breath control and mindfulness, helping divers enhance their buoyancy and overall underwater experience. Ron makes sure to have a space dedicated for these value-added services, ensuring his travelers have a private area to take part in activities they enjoy. Making It More Than Just a Vacation
West Shore Scuba’s Bonaire trip wasn’t just about fun dives; it was also a chance for divers to grow their skills. The group completed over 60 certifications, including Open Water, Advanced Nitrox, Dive Against Debris, Night Diver, and Wreck Diver courses. This gave participants a unique opportunity to complete certifications in a warm, tropical environment rather than in colder waters back home.
To enhance the experience, West Shore Scuba added value through well-thought-out extras. Rental gear was made available at special rates, allowing travelers to rent equipment in Pennsylvania at a fraction of the cost of an extended rental in Bonaire. Nitrox courses were emphasized – with 22 divers earning their Nitrox cert on the trip – so that they could take advantage of Plaza Bonaire’s free Nitrox offerings to extend bottom times and maximize dive enjoyment. Each offering is personalized to meet the destination.
Communication and Coordination: The Glue That Holds It All Together
One of the key factors behind the success of this trip was communication. A dedicated WhatsApp group kept participants connected, allowing them to coordinate dives, share sightings, and plan impromptu adventures. Each evening at dinner, divers recounted their day’s experiences, leading to a natural flow of excitement that carried into the next day. This level of interaction ensured that no one ever felt left out, while still allowing divers the freedom to explore at their own pace.
Additionally, West Shore Scuba hosted pre-trip Zoom meetings to set expectations, answer questions, and introduce special trip features such as night diving and specialty courses. These meetings helped build excitement and ensured that everyone was well-prepared before stepping foot on the island. Open and honest communication sets a great foundation for any relationship.
