Visitors to the Republic of Costa Rica will find that despite its small size, the country has an incredible number of attractions and activities to offer. Five per cent of the world’s biodiversity can be found within Costa Rica’s borders and great efforts have been made to preserve this rich resource; protected national parks make up almost 25% of the land – more than any other country in the world. From fishing and surfing to white water rafting and exploring volcanic regions, Costa Rica is the perfect playground for nature lovers and adventures seekers alike!
Diving
Dive Conditions & Best Season
- Dry season (Pacific: December–April) offers clearer visibility, calmer seas, but colder water for experienced divers seeking manta ray encounters.
- Rainy season (Pacific: May–November) brings nutrient-rich water, excellent marine life sightings, and smooth surface conditions.
- Caribbean coast: diving is excellent year-round; but note hurricane risk from September–November.
Water Temperatures
- Pacific Coast:
- Warmest May–November: 75–87 °F (24–30 °C)
- Cooler December–April: as low as 68–76 °F (20–25 °C) at depth.
- Caribbean Coast: approximately 75–85 °F (24–29 °C).
Visibility
- Pacific: typically 30–100 ft (10–30 m)—best in dry season; may dip during plankton blooms.
- Caribbean: visibility often 50–80 ft (15–25 m).
Marine Life Highlights
- Pacific sites: Hammerhead and reef sharks, manta rays, whale sharks, mobula rays, spotted eagle rays, turtles, dolphins, tropical fish.
- Caño Island (Osa Peninsula): rich in barracuda, dolphins, sea turtles, false killer whales, manta rays, octopus, nudibranchs.
- Golfo Dulce: known for scalloped hammerhead nursery and sightings of humpback whales and dolphins in a fjord-like nature reserve.
- Cocos Island (offshore Pacific): world-renowned for hammerhead swarms, whale sharks, large pelagics and schooling tuna. Best suited for experienced divers.
Prime Dive Sites & Experiences
Pacific Side
- Catalina Islands (Guanacaste / Papagayo)
- Seasonal giant manta ray cleaning stations (Jan–Mar), calm seas during green season (May–Nov) but slightly warmer water.
- Visibility: ~30–60 ft; depth variable; moderate currents.
- Bat Islands (Isla Murciélago)
- For advanced divers: bull sharks, tiger sharks, eagle rays, seasonal manta and whale shark visits.
- Caño Island Biological Reserve
- Vibrant reef with turtles, sharks, manta rays, abundant fish; exceptional visibility (up to ~80 ft). Access from Drake Bay or Uvita.
- Golfo Dulce (Osa Peninsula)—notable for hammerhead nursery and dolphin encounters in a calm fjord ecosystem.
Caribbean Side
- Punta Uva (Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge)
- Calm and turquoise waters; ideal for beginners; turtles, reef fish, seahorses, macro, and occasional rays.
Gear & Equipment Recommendations
- Wetsuit:
- 3mm full/shorty suitable most of year.
- In cooler Pacific dry season or for down current dives, consider 5mm.
- Reef-safe sunscreen, fins, mask, snorkel.
- Dive computer and depth gauge—especially for sites with varying depths like Catalina, Bat Islands, or Caño.
- SMB/DSMB for drift or boat dives.
- Underwater camera—wide-angle for marine megafauna; macro for reefs and shipworms.
- Nitrox likely available at larger operators—handy for repetitive deeper dives (e.g. Bat Islands, Cocos).
Special Considerations & Tips
- Experience Levels:
- Beginner-friendly sites: Punta Uva, Papagayo reefs.
- Intermediate to advanced: Bat Islands, Caño, Catalinas (manta dives), Cocos liveaboards.
- Cocos Island: require Advanced Open Water and typically ~30 logged dives, due to strong currents and open-ocean conditions.
- Seasonal Preferences:
- Want manta ray cleaning stations? Visit Catalina islands Jan–Mar.
- Prefer warm, calm seas? May–Nov Pacific (green season) is ideal.
- Seeking pelagic action (bull sharks, mobulas)? Bat Islands April–August.
- Marine Park Fees & Conservation:
- Protected zones like Isla del Caño require reserve permits.
- Golfo Dulce is Costa Rica’s first shark sanctuary.
- Local logistics:
- Liveaboards serve remote destinations (Cocos).
- Shore and day-boat options available for Caño, Catalinas, Bat Islands.
- English widely understood, USD accepted, good dive infrastructure in Guanacaste, Osa, Puerto Viejo.
