Set along Bali’s northeastern coast, about a 2.5-hour drive from Ubud and a 3-hour drive from Kuta, the tiny town of Tulamben is a quaint collection of rustic houses, shops, restaurants, diving centers and resorts on the shore of a scenic black lava rock beach. The village’s primary appeal is The Liberty, a 393-foot (120-m) long American cargo ship that sank to the sea after the eruption of Mount Agung in the 1960s pushed the vessel to sea, creating an exotic wonderland of marine wildlife. Divers can spot schools of fusilier, trevally, bream, anthias mill, batfish, anemone, lionfish, scorpionfish, hawkfish, pufferfish, and more. Land dwellers can trek to the summit of Mount Batur or Mount Agung or browse for souvenirs at the morning market, about a mile (1.5km) north of the dive site.
