Resting on the shores of Balgai Bay, Kavieng is the main port of the island and serves as the capital of Papua New Guinean province of New Ireland. It lies at the northern tip and is the largest town on the island, also named New Ireland. Kavieng is renowned for its excellent diving opportunities, featuring a host of incredibly scenic natural sites as well as historic plane and shipwrecks from the Second Worl War. It also provides a convenient base from which to explore the surrounding islands: Nusa Lik Island, Lavongai, Nusa Lawa and Nango Island.
