Day 1 of diving, Fiji Style

Had a hearty divers breakfast of an omelette, bacon, and fresh fruit to fuel me for the day’s dives!  Brilliant blue skies, turquoise water and a little bit of a breeze was the setting for this mornings dives.  I was fortunate enough to have Tony Backhurst from Scuba Travel UK join me on the dives.  We had the whole boat to ourselves so the schedule and the pace of the day was for us to choose!

Our first dive was called 7 sisters which was a series of pinnacles that you could see in one dive or stay around 1 or 2 the entire dive but the deepest part of the dive was at the end of the pinnacles and featured a great wreck covered in hard corals, brilliantly colored soft corals, and lots of little critters hiding about in the sponges and cracks and crevices of the wreck.

The pinnacles were encrusted with healthy hard corals, sea fans, and soft corals of all colors.  There were swim throughs with beautiful fans and light rays coming through the cracks of the swim throughs.  There were several overhangs as well extremely large sea fans.  There was black coral on the deeper part of the pinnacles as well as on the wreck.

Water temps was hovering around 79 – 80 and was quite comfortable, especially in my 5MM 😉 as most of you that know me know that I do not do cold water well ;-).

For our surface interval, we stopped at an absolutely gorgeous white sand beach where we had lunch.  Since we had a late start for the diving today, they kitchen staff took our lunch order the night before since we would miss lunch at the resort.

Our second dive was equally as interesting with a series pinnacles and swim throughs, and amazingly healthy and vibrant coral growth on the top of them.  Great way to spend your safety stops and hunt around for critters.  School of Chevron Barracudas and schooling other reef fish and Anthias.

On our way back to Waidroka, we were escorted by a small pod of Spinner Dolphins, a nice ending to the day’s diving.  Back at the resort, speaking to another guest, they had a pod of pilot whales they encountered the previous day so I guess i will be looking out for them while diving tomorrow!.

Tonight was Indian Curry night!  Yay!  Dahl soup, chicken curry and rice, and Roti.

Walking back to my bure after dinner tonight, I could hear the thunderous sound of the waves breaking over the reef and knew i was going to be sleeping like a baby tonight!

Good night from Fiji everyone and hope you are enjoying my entries!  As soon as i figure out how to post videos on the blog, I will update with some of the underwater footage I took today!
